(Transport–Reaction–Thermodynamic Framework for Spatiotemporal Electrochemical Systems)
Our laboratory's research aims to establish a fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms governing electrochemical energy systems and translate this knowledge into the design of next-generation energy devices. At the core of our research lies a common scientific question: How do structure, transport, fluid flow, and electrochemical reactions interact, and how can these processes be controlled in both space and time to achieve high performance, approach thermodynamic limits, and maintain operational stability?
Although electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and redox flow batteries, differ in their materials, configurations, and operating principles, they share several fundamental physical processes. These include mass transport, ionic and electronic conduction, fluid flow, heat transfer, and electrochemical reactions. These processes occur simultaneously across different spatial and temporal scales, collectively determining device performance, efficiency, and degradation.
Our research therefore begins by examining the gap between the theoretical limits imposed by thermodynamics and the actual performance achieved in engineering systems. We employ the concept of entropy generation to identify the sources of irreversibility and energy losses within electrochemical devices. This thermodynamic approach allows us to distinguish losses associated with diffusion, fluid flow, charge transport, heat transfer, and electrochemical reactions. Consequently, rather than simply quantifying how much energy is lost, we seek to understand where these losses occur, which physical mechanisms are responsible, and how device structures or operating conditions can be modified to minimize them.
Building upon this understanding of thermodynamics and transport phenomena, our research extends toward identifying optimal device architectures, with topology optimization serving as one of our key design methodologies. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on engineering intuition or predefined geometric configurations, topology optimization enables material distributions and structural configurations to emerge directly from governing physical equations, boundary conditions, and performance objectives. These objectives may include maximizing reaction rates, improving reactant accessibility, reducing transport resistance, or minimizing entropy generation.
The resulting structures may exhibit interconnected networks, branching patterns, or architectures resembling natural transport systems. Certain regions may function as primary transport pathways, while others provide favorable environments for electrochemical reactions. These characteristics reflect a central principle of our research: Optimal structures should not be designed independently of the underlying transport and reaction physics; rather, they should emerge from the coordinated interactions of these processes.
This concept naturally leads to the investigation of heterogeneous electrode structures. In practical electrochemical systems, electrode properties are rarely uniform throughout the entire domain. Porosity, pore size, tortuosity, ionic conductivity, electronic conductivity, and electrochemical activity can vary significantly with position. Therefore, electrode design does not necessarily need to pursue structural uniformity. Instead, deliberately engineered heterogeneity can be exploited to enhance transport, distribute reactions more effectively, and improve overall device performance.
Our research extends beyond spatial structure optimization toward the broader concept of spatiotemporal engineering, in which transport and electrochemical reactions are strategically managed in both space and time.
From a spatial perspective, properties such as porosity, active material distribution, flow pathways, and transport networks can be tailored according to their positions within a device. From a temporal perspective, operating parameters such as fluid flow rate, electrical current, pressure, concentration, and other operating conditions can be dynamically controlled. For example, pulsating flow in fuel cells or electrolyzers can modify boundary-layer behavior and time-dependent mass transport, while battery charging and discharging protocols can influence concentration distributions, reaction nonuniformity, and degradation processes within electrodes.
Accordingly, the design objective is not simply to identify the "best structure," but rather to determine which structure should operate under which conditions, and at what time, to achieve the most favorable coupling between transport and reaction processes.

A critical element connecting our modeling, design, and experimental investigations is the study of Electrochemical Signatures, which represent the characteristic electrochemical responses of energy devices.
From our laboratory's perspective, an electrochemical signature is not merely an indicator of whether a device performs well or poorly. Instead, it is regarded as a fingerprint of the underlying physical and electrochemical processes occurring within the system. Measurable external responses, such as voltage, current, impedance, and charge, arise from the combined effects of multiple internal processes, including charge transfer, ionic conduction, species diffusion, concentration accumulation and depletion, surface electrochemical reactions, and time-dependent changes in electrode structures and materials.
The analysis of electrochemical signatures therefore provides a bridge between internal physical processes that cannot be directly observed and electrical responses that can be experimentally measured.
By examining electrochemical responses under different structural configurations and operating conditions, it becomes possible to establish characteristic electrochemical fingerprints of individual devices. Importantly, these measurements are not interpreted independently of physical models. Instead, they are integrated with the governing equations of transport and electrochemical reactions to identify the parameters and physical mechanisms responsible for the observed responses.
Thermodynamics → Transport → Reaction → Spatiotemporal Structure → Performance → Optimization → Electrochemical Signature
In the long term, our objective is to establish an integrated scientific framework connecting: Thermodynamics → Transport → Reaction → Spatiotemporal Structure → Performance → Optimization → Electrochemical Signature
This framework aims to establish a two-way connection between measurable electrochemical responses and the physical mechanisms governing device behavior. On one hand, experimentally observed signatures can be interpreted to investigate the internal processes responsible for device performance and degradation. On the other hand, insights obtained from fundamental physical models can guide the design of new materials, electrode architectures, flow fields, and operating strategies. Importantly, this approach is not restricted to any particular electrochemical technology but seeks to identify principles that can be transferred across different energy storage and conversion systems.
