The world is currently at a critical turning point in the global energy transition, shifting from dependence on fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas, toward renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power. However, this transition cannot be achieved simply by expanding renewable energy generation capacity. It also requires the development and deployment of advanced energy technologies, such as fuel cells, batteries, and large-scale energy storage systems, to enable more efficient and flexible energy generation, conversion, storage, and utilization.
In this context, modern mechanical engineering plays a crucial role in facilitating the transition from conventional technologies, such as internal combustion engines and thermal power generation, toward cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy systems.
Since my student years, I have been continuously engaged in research related to energy and the environment, covering a wide range of electrochemical technologies, including fuel cells, electrolyzers, flow batteries, and batteries. Although these systems differ in their physical characteristics and applications, they share a fundamental challenge: controlling electrochemical reactions while simultaneously managing heat and mass transfer.
Our research therefore focuses on developing approaches to understand the fundamental factors governing the behavior of these systems and applying this knowledge to push their performance as close as possible to their theoretical limits. Our work encompasses the development of fuel cells, electrolyzers, flow batteries, and batteries, as well as the design of materials and structures that enhance transport processes. These efforts span the entire research process, from material fabrication and structural design to device performance evaluation, the analysis of physical phenomena, and the investigation of the fundamental mechanisms operating within these systems.
At the heart of our research is the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the "gap between the theoretical limits imposed by thermodynamics and the actual performance achieved in engineering systems." We seek to identify the origins of performance losses and limitations, whether arising from reaction kinetics, mass transport, charge transport, or heat transfer. Building on this understanding, we aim to design and develop systems that can more effectively control and enhance the dynamics of reactions and transport processes, thereby improving their overall performance.
Through this approach, we strive to establish fundamental knowledge that connects phenomena across multiple length scales, from the macroscopic to the microscopic and nanoscopic levels. Our ultimate ambition is to contribute to both the "Future Energy Society" and the "Future of Manufacturing," while integrating these research insights into education and student development.
Our goal extends beyond the creation of new technologies. We are equally committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers and engineers who can approach complex problems from fundamental principles, connect knowledge across multiple scales and disciplines, and transform scientific understanding into innovations that address global energy and environmental challenges. Ultimately, we aspire to cultivate "researchers and engineers who will shape and drive the next era."
