Our Research Philosophy
I have always believed that research should be driven by curiosity and independent thinking, rather than simply following what others have done or suggested. To me, the true joy of research lies in asking our own questions, exploring new ideas, and discovering answers through our own efforts. Whether an experiment or investigation produces the expected results or not, there is something remarkable about being among the first to observe and understand a phenomenon that may never have been discovered or explained before. When these discoveries, however small, contribute to scientific progress or benefit society, they bring a sense of joy and fulfillment that is difficult to find elsewhere.
However, research is not always about discovering something new. It is also a process of learning how to ask meaningful questions, analyze problems from fundamental principles, and accept results that may differ from our expectations. Sometimes, an unsuccessful experiment can lead to insights that are more valuable than the results we originally sought. I therefore place as much importance on the process of thinking and learning as on the final outcomes. These experiences help develop problem-solving abilities and the confidence to face the unknown, both of which are essential qualities for researchers and engineers.
Since the establishment of the Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion Laboratory (esc Lab) at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in May 2022, our research group has continued to grow, bringing together students and researchers from diverse academic, professional, and cultural backgrounds. Our research spans various electrochemical energy technologies, including batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, and flow batteries. These activities range from investigating fundamental physical and electrochemical phenomena to designing materials, structures, and systems that improve the performance of energy technologies.
Although our members work on different research topics, we share a common interest in understanding why engineering systems experience performance limitations and how scientific and engineering principles can help overcome them. We want our students to learn more than how to conduct experiments, operate instruments, or develop numerical models. They should also be able to explain why their research matters, why a particular approach is appropriate, what their results actually mean, and what questions remain unanswered.
To me, a research laboratory should be more than a place where experiments are conducted and publications are produced. It should be an environment that encourages discussion, questioning, and learning together. I want students to feel comfortable expressing their own ideas, even when those ideas challenge what I or others have previously believed, and to discuss them openly based on scientific reasoning and evidence. Good research is not about following an advisor's instructions at every step. Rather, it is a gradual process of developing from someone who relies on guidance into an independent researcher who can formulate research questions, design investigations, evaluate results, and make informed scientific decisions, while continuing to learn from discussions with advisors and colleagues.
Beyond the Laboratory: Learning Without Borders
Beyond developing research capabilities, I believe that graduate education should not be confined to classrooms and laboratories. It should also provide opportunities to broaden perspectives, build professional networks, and become part of the international scientific community. Working with people from different backgrounds and experiences helps students recognize that a single problem can be approached and solved in many ways. It also develops communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills, which are just as important as technical knowledge.
For this reason, we strive to provide students with opportunities that extend beyond completing the research required for graduation. These include conducting research abroad, collaborating with researchers from other institutions, presenting findings at international conferences, and pursuing further academic studies. I believe these experiences not only improve the quality of research but also expose students to different ways of thinking and research cultures, potentially inspiring ideas that might never emerge within a familiar environment alone.
Since we began welcoming graduate and research students in 2023, six students have graduated from esc Lab. One of the most rewarding aspects of leading our research group is seeing our graduates develop their careers in industry and academia, applying the knowledge and experience gained during their time with us. Each student may define success differently, but what matters most to me is seeing them develop confidence in their abilities and pursue the paths they have chosen.
Over the past few years, almost all of our students have had opportunities to gain international experience through academic exchanges, short- and long-term research visits, conference presentations, and scholarships for further studies abroad.
Research and International Exchange
The University of Osaka, Institute of Science Tokyo
Our students have had opportunities to conduct research and exchange knowledge at leading international institutions, including The University of Osaka, Institute of Science Tokyo, and Kanazawa University in Japan, with research stays of approximately one year at each institution. Other international research experiences include Imperial College London in the United Kingdom for four months and National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan for two months.
Conducting research abroad is not simply an opportunity to learn new experimental techniques or use advanced equipment. It also allows students to develop independence, communicate and discuss scientific ideas with researchers from different backgrounds, and experience different academic and working cultures. These experiences contribute to their development not only as researchers but also as individuals.
Graduate Study and Scholarships
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech)
Research experience and academic achievements can also open doors to further education. Our students have received opportunities to pursue graduate studies at Kyushu University in Japan through the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation) and at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) in Taiwan with financial support from the university.
I believe these opportunities reflect not only the students' academic abilities but also the dedication, responsibility, and perseverance they have developed throughout their research journeys.
International Conferences and Academic Networks
Another experience we consider important is presenting research to the broader scientific community. In addition to participating in international conferences held in Thailand, our students have had opportunities to present their work at conferences abroad, including the Battery Symposium in Japan, one of Japan's major scientific meetings in battery technology; the Asian Conference on Thermal Sciences (ACTS) in China, an international forum for thermal sciences in the Asia-Pacific region; and the SIAM Conference on Optimization (OP26) in Scotland, United Kingdom, an international conference dedicated to optimization.
For young researchers, presenting at these conferences is not simply about communicating their findings. It is also an opportunity to receive questions and feedback from experienced researchers, learn about different research approaches, and gain a broader perspective on developments in their fields. Sometimes, a single question from a conference participant can inspire a new idea or even change the direction of a research project.
At the same time, our laboratory welcomes international students, visiting researchers, and doctoral students who pursue their studies alongside professional careers. Over the years, we have had opportunities to work with students and researchers from Germany, France, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. This diversity brings different experiences, perspectives, and cultures into our laboratory. I believe such an environment encourages learning and creativity while preparing students to work in increasingly international academic and professional communities.
Looking Ahead: Research, People, and the Future
Looking ahead, we aim to pursue research that contributes to the development of next-generation energy technologies and a more sustainable society. Our work particularly emphasizes understanding the fundamental mechanisms governing electrochemical phenomena, heat and mass transfer, charge transport, and the processes responsible for energy losses in engineering systems. By developing this knowledge, we seek to design materials, structures, and energy systems that operate more efficiently and approach their theoretical performance limits.
We believe that meaningful scientific progress does not come from individual effort alone. It also depends on open discussions, collaboration, and the willingness to question or challenge established ideas. Through partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry, both in Thailand and internationally, we seek to investigate fundamental scientific questions while translating the knowledge we discover into practical engineering solutions.
However, I do not believe that the success of a research laboratory should be measured solely by the number of publications, research achievements, or international collaborations. It should also be reflected in the growth of the people who have been part of it. I want to see students who initially lack confidence in their abilities gradually develop into researchers who can formulate scientific questions, design studies, analyze results, and discuss their findings with confidence. I want them to learn how to deal with disappointment when experiments do not go as expected and how to turn these challenges into opportunities for learning.
Above all, I hope that esc Lab will remain a place where students and researchers are encouraged to think independently, question existing knowledge, learn from both successes and failures, and take pride in their discoveries. I do not believe that students need to measure their success against that of others, because everyone has different interests, ambitions, and paths toward personal and professional growth.
We want our students to recognize that learning and research can take them far beyond the boundaries of a classroom, laboratory, or even their home country. Whether they eventually pursue careers in universities, research institutions, industry, or other professional fields, we hope their experiences here will provide a strong foundation for continuous learning and personal development.
Ultimately, our goal extends beyond generating scientific knowledge or developing new technologies. We also seek to cultivate researchers and engineers who are curious, capable of systematic and independent thinking, responsible for their work, and confident enough to explore the unknown. We hope they will use their knowledge and abilities to help shape the future of energy technologies and society.
หรือ Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
For students interested in Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion, including batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, and the fundamental physical phenomena underlying these technologies, we welcome those who wish to pursue a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree and are eager to develop themselves through meaningful research.
We do not expect everyone to arrive with extensive research experience or a complete understanding of their chosen field. What matters most to us is a genuine curiosity to learn, a willingness to understand problems deeply, and the determination to continue improving.
Let us ask questions, explore the unknown, discover new knowledge, broaden our perspectives, and grow together. We believe that the future of research depends not only on technology itself but also on the people who will imagine, develop, and advance the technologies of tomorrow.
