Water electrolyzers are electrochemical energy conversion devices that produce hydrogen through water splitting using electrical energy. Among the various technologies, proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE) are promising approaches for producing green hydrogen using renewable electricity. To support the widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies, further improvements in electrolyzer efficiency, durability, and cost are essential.
A key to achieving these goals lies in the design and optimization of porous electrodes and transport layers, where electrochemical reactions, water transport, and gas evolution take place. The complex interactions among electrochemical kinetics, mass transport, charge transport, and two-phase flow strongly influence electrolyzer performance, particularly under high-current-density operating conditions. Effective management of water supply, gas bubble removal, and heat transfer is therefore crucial for improving hydrogen production efficiency and operational stability.
Our laboratory focuses on understanding the fundamental electrochemical and transport phenomena governing water electrolyzer performance, as well as designing advanced electrode materials and porous structures to enhance reaction kinetics and transport processes. We conduct comprehensive research spanning material fabrication, electrode structural design and optimization, electrochemical and multiphysics modeling, and device performance evaluation and analysis, with the aim of developing more efficient, durable, and cost-effective hydrogen production systems.
