Fuel cells, flow batteries, and other electrochemical energy devices involve complex reactive flow fields within porous structures. To improve the performance of these devices, it is essential to understand the detailed distributions of electrochemical reactions and fluid flow within their internal structures, which are often difficult to observe experimentally. Such understanding provides a foundation for identifying and designing optimal structures that enhance device performance.
In addition to experimental investigations of electrochemical energy devices, our laboratory focuses on developing advanced numerical methods for analyzing coupled reaction and transport phenomena in complex geometries. Our research encompasses the coupled analysis of gas and liquid flows through porous media, gas–solid and gas–liquid multiphase flows, the transport of chemical species including ions, electrochemical reactions, and electric potential distributions.
Our modeling approaches span multiple length scales, ranging from macroscale simulations based on spatially averaged governing equations to microscale simulations that explicitly resolve individual pore structures. Through these multiscale and multiphysics analyses, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing electrochemical energy systems and provide a scientific basis for their structural optimization and performance enhancement.
